Oulun Energia is investing in a new 60‑megawatt electric boiler to be built in connection with the Oulunsuu heating plant. The value of the investment is approximately EUR 11.6 million. Construction work is planned to begin in summer 2026, and the boiler is expected to be completed in autumn 2027. The boiler will be supplied by the Norwegian company Parat Halvorsen AS.
An electric boiler is a flexible, non-combustion-based solution for producing district heating. Electricity is fed to the boiler’s electrodes, which heat the water. The hot water is then fed directly into the district heating network.
“Electric boilers are a key part of a modern energy system in which electricity and heat production are becoming increasingly closely integrated. An electric boiler enables heat to be produced quickly and flexibly, especially when electricity is abundantly available and market prices are low,” says Mikko Vesterinen, Head of Assets at Oulun Energia.
The investment is part of Oulun Energia’s strategic development, preparing the company for the renewal of district heating production and for the end of operations at the Toppila 2 power plant in the 2030s. The electric boiler investment also supports Oulun Energia’s net zero emissions target, as it
The electric boiler now under construction will be the company’s third, increasing its total electric boiler capacity to 160 megawatts. The existing electric boilers are located in Toppila and Laanila.
