04.05.2026 / Last updated 00:00

Water was released into the fish pass bypassing the Merikoski hydropower plant on Monday, 4 May 2026. At the same time, live monitoring of migrating fish was launched on Oulu Energy’s website.

Completed in 2003, the Merikoski fish pass, enables fish to migrate from the sea, past the power plant, to the upper reaches of the River Oulujoki. Salmon and other migratory fish can travel 40 kilometres from the mouth of the river to the Montta power plant as well as to the side branches of the River Oulujoki, the River Muhosjoki and the River Sanginjoki.

During the previous season, 2,468 salmon and 428 sea trout migrated through the fish pass. The number of salmon was the second highest in the history of the fish pass, while for sea trout it marked the fourth best year on record.

Opening hours of the fish pass observation point

The fish pass observation point will traditionally be opened to the public during the peak migration period in late summer. At the observation point, visitors can watch fish as they move through the fish pass just before entering the River Oulu. A fish biologist will also be present on site to answer questions about the underwater life of fish.

The fish pass observation point will be open to the public on:
  • Thu 27 August – Sat 29 August, 11:00–17:00
  • Thu 3 September – Sat 5 September, 11:00–17:00
The observation point will be hosted by fish biologist Päivi Rintamäki.

The fish pass observation point is located at the upper section of the fish pass. You can see the exact location on the map.
