Planning for Structural Modifications to the Merikoski Dam Channel Progresses – Bottom to Be Laser Scanned on Friday, October 10
At the beginning of September, Oulun Energia announced it would begin planning structural modifications to the Merikoski dam channel. The goal is to prevent migratory fish from becoming trapped in the deep areas below the dam.
The planning work is now advancing with a laser scan of the channel bottom, scheduled for Friday, October 10. This measurement method uses laser beams to produce precise three-dimensional data of the target area. Before the laser scanning is carried out, the bottom of the channel will be pumped dry. The work may occasionally restrict access for pedestrians on the dam bridge.
Based on the laser scan, the rock surface will be treated and deep areas will be drained into the fishway channel. This will reduce the risk of fish becoming trapped and improve their guidance into the fishway. The channel modification work will be carried out in late autumn or early winter after the fishway is closed, provided weather and safety conditions allow.
