Warning signals at Merikoski power plant announce the opening of the flood dam | Oulun Energia
A familiar 30-second-long warning signal has been heard a number of times this spring in conjunction with the opening of the Merikoski flood dams. The signal is intended to warn people working downstream and in the vicinity of the flood channel of the impending strong flow of water.
Opening the dam depends on the volume of spring meltwater flowing from the Oulujoki catchment area into the Oulujoki river. According to the Flood Centre, the water situation is currently normal.
The flood dams will open more often than normal on average during the spring and summer due to the start of work on modernising the electrical automation system and maintenance of the lower channel support wall at the Merikoski power plant. More information about the upcoming work and its schedule will be provided during the spring.
